VPN (Virtual Private Network) is considered a bit safer for network security and keeps your device secure when you are connected to a public Wi-Fi. And, if you are a Chromebook user and also have a VPN account, then you can use it on your Chromebook too. You can easily connect your Chromebook to a private network, to the network at your work or school, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.
You can use some types of VPNs on your Chromebook without installing any software. For other types, you can install VPN apps, including Pulse Secure VPN, SonicWALL Mobile Connect, Cisco AnyConnect, F5 Access, and GlobalProtect.
If you are registered with any VPN company, they will provide you some application for your Windows or Mac which will install by one click. But, for your Chromebook, you have to enter the details manually. Before doing all this, you can check for the app on the Chrome Web Store and check for the browser extension of that VPN.
Method 1: Go Easy with One-Click Solution via Chrome Extension
The easiest way to connect to a VPN on your Chromebook is by adding a Chrome Extension on your Google Chrome browser. The method for installing the extension is same as others. So, of your VPN company is on Chrome Web Store, then you can install the application and of not available, here’s what you’ll need to do.
Method 2: Steps to Manually Add a VPN on a Chromebook
This method is useful if you don’t find the extension of your VPN on Google Chrome Web Store. Before going directly to adding up the VPN network, first find out whether your VPN provider uses a CA Certificate for a connection or not. If yes, then you need to import the CA Certificates into your Chromebook. Now you will be thinking What is CA Certificates? Let me explain it first.
Basically, a CA Certificate is a key that verifies your trust. There are numbers of keys pre-installed on your Chromebook for various web services. But, you have to provide that new one from your VPN provider which will be given to you at the time of purchasing. For doing this, follow these steps:
Steps for Importing Certificates
Step 1: First, open the Google Chrome Browser and in the address bar type: chrome://settings/certificates and then press enter.
Step 2: There you will see many options. From there, click on the Authorities tab at the top of the page.
Step 3: Now, click on the Import button and choose the file you want to add from the VPN.
Step 4: A new dialog box will appear asking you about your trust on the new certificate you are adding. If you’re unsure, you can leave everything unchecked (recommended). Now you are done with importing.
Step 5: For importing the Users Certificates, you can follow the same procedure. Only choose the User certificates tab instead of the Authorities tab.
Now, the certificated are added. The step is to do all the settings of the VPN.
Steps to Add VPN on Chromebook
Now, you need to add up all the details about your server and connect your VPN account with Chromebook. For doing this, just follow these simple steps.
Step 1: The first step is to click on your Account Photo in the lower left of the screen. From there, select the Settings option.
Step 2: Now go to the Network section and from there click on the Add connection button and then choose “Add OPenVPN/L2TP“.
Step 3: After choosing the above option, a new popup box will appear. In this box, you have to fill all the information about your VPN. You will find all the information from your VPN providers website. I am explaining all the fields which are to be filled in detail for your ease.
- Server Hostname: This is the name or the IP address of the server which you want to connect.
- Service Name: This is the name of the connection which will be shown in the settings. You can keep it anything you want.
- Provider Type: If you want to enter the second password once you log-on to your VPN, then select the First Option. If you have a separate user certificate, then select Second Option. And if none of the first two is suitable for your VPN, then choose the Third Option.
- Pre-shared Key: In this column, you have to enter the second password. If you don’t want, then leave it blank.
- Server CA certificate: I have mentioned above about how to install the CA Certificated. If you have done with the installation, select it from the list, otherwise leave it default.
- User certificate: This is also same as CA Certificated. If you have installed it, then select from the list or leave it default.
Now, the other fields are very common like Username, Password and Group Name which you can fill easily.
Step 4: After completing the above step, the next step is to check the box to Save identity and password. By enabling this option, your Id and Password will be saved and you can connect to the network with just one click. But, if you want to enter username and password each time, then don’t tick this option.
Step 5: Now the final step is to hit the Connect button. After checking your entered information, you will be connected to the network. And for confirmation, you will see a Key Symbol beside your Wi-Fi icon. For your reference, see the image below.
