To password protect USB flash drive or external USB hard drive with BitLocker is very easy. Simply follow the step given below.
Step-1: First you have to Connect your USB flash or hard drive to your Windows 10 running PC.
Step-2: Once you connect the USB drive now navigate to This PC icon on the desktop. There, right-click on the USB drive and then click on the Turn on BitLocker option from the menu.
Step-3: After that, a new pop-up will open and here click on the checkbox which is next to option Use a password to unlock the drive.
Step-4: Now enter the password to protect your data on the USB drive, reenter the password to verify the password, and then finally click Next button to save the changes.
Always use at least one uppercase letter, number, lower case letter, and symbol in order to make your password strong.
Step-5: Once you click on next button a new page will open where BitLocker offers you three ways to back up the recovery key, just in case you forget the password. You can either save the key to your Microsoft account, save to a file, or print the recovery key.
Step-6: You can click any option according to your need and once you select the options click on the Next button.
Step-7: Now you will see Choose how much of your USB drive to encrypt screen with two options
- Encrypt used disk space (faster and best for new PCs and drives)
- Encrypt entire drive (slower but best for PCs and drives already in use)
You can choose any of the options but I recommend you to choose the Encrypt entire drive option.
Step-8: Once you have selected the option now click on the Next button for the next step.
Step-9: Now you will see Choose which encryption mode to use screen with two option
- New encryption mode (best for fixed drives on this device)
- Compatible mode (best for drives that can be moved from this device)
Here you have to choose the Compatible mode (best for drives that can be moved from this device) option. Once you have selected the option now click on the Next button.
Step-10: Finally Click on the Start encrypting button to begin encrypting your drive on your PC. This might take a few minutes to hours depending on what you have chosen from the above steps.
During the process of encryption, you can use your PC for any other purpose. Once the encryption process is completed you will see Encryption of X is a complete message on your screen. You may now disconnect the drive.

To check if your USB drive is password encrypted or not for this follow the step given below:
Step-1: Connect your encrypted USB flash or hard drive to your Windows 10 running PC.
Step-2: Open up This PC to see your USB drive.
Step-3: Double click on the connected USB drive now you will see a prompt asking you to enter the password. Here you have to type in the password and then click on the Unlock button to access the data on your USB drive.
Steps to Turn Off BitLocker and remove the Password from the Drive
Step-1: First you have to connect your USB drive to PC and then unlock the drive by double-clicking on the USB drive in This PC and then enter the password.
Step-2: Once the connected USB drive is unlocked now right-click on the USB drive, and from the menu click on Manage BitLocker option. This action will open the BitLocker Drive Encryption window.
Step-3: Once the BitLocker Drive Encryption window is open on your screen now here under the Removable data drives- BitLocker To Go section you have to click on Turn off BitLocker link.
Step-4: Once you click on the link you will see a confirmation dialog box here click on the Turn Off BitLocker button to begin the process of decryption your USB drive.
Step-5: Once your USB drive is successfully decrypted you will see Decrypting of X: is the complete message on your screen.
Now click on the Close button to close the dialog box and in This PC you can see your USB drive will open without entering any password.
